Jeeralang and Boolarra to Merge

Recent club meetings of the Jeeralang and Boolarra Cricket Clubs have formally endorsed a proposal to merge the two clubs. An inaugural meeting for the newly merged club is planned for Saturday June 23rd at the Boolarra Club Hotel.

President of the Jeeralang Cricket Club, Mick Wright, said “the merger opens up some exciting prospects for the new club. We will be able to strengthen sides in all grades of cricket with an expanded player base.” The new club plans to field four senior sides with A, B and two C Grade sides in the TDCA. Combined club resources will also see an expansion of junior cricket with under 12, under 14 and potentially under 16 teams.

President of the Boolarra Cricket Club, Rick Teychenne said, “the merger is great for cricket in Boolarra. It creates the opportunity for Boolarra senior players to progress to the highest grade of cricket in the TDCA. It also provides a pathway for junior cricketers to progress through to senior grades of cricket.” The merger will see A and B Grade cricket played in Churchill on the Gaskin Park turf and the two C Grade sides at home on the Boolarra Memorial Park. Mr. Teychenne continued saying that, “The merger is important for the Club and Boolarra as a small community. At a time when many small sporting clubs are struggling we needed to find ways of building a future for cricket in our township.”

The merger proposal originated from talks between the two club Presidents following the 2000/2001 season. A number of meetings have taken place between the two club executives and a memorandum of understanding drawn up to guide the merger process. The new club will be known as Jeeralang Boolarra and has been positively received by the TDCA. The interim committee will be looking to appoint a senior coach in the near future and junior coaches have already been approached.

In concluding the two Presidents stated they were looking forward to the challenges of the coming season and being competitive and successful in all grades of cricket.

All players, past and present are invited to attend the Inaugural General Meeting, Saturday 23rd at 7.30 p.m. at the Boolarra Club Hotel.
